One thing that the majority of protein/power/everything but the kitchen sink bars have in common is that they tend to taste pretty terrible. Almost everyone can agree that the bars they like; nobody else likes. Well, an Illinois start up called Element Bars is trying to change that stereotype. The premise of the company is that through their website users can create their own nutritional bars by choosing from many different ingredients to suit their own nutritional and taste preferences.
To build a bar, you first choose your texture(including oaty, crispy, datey) and you then add your choice of fruits, nuts, supplements, and powders. Once you’re done the site even gives you warning if the bar you’ve put together will be a total mess.
They run $36/12 pack. For the non health bar freak wondering if that’s a good deal; it is slightly above average for the normal protein/energy bars and below average for a meal replacement bar. If you can build a bar that you really like, I think the slight price difference might be worth it. You can get a $6 discount if you choose a bar from the “popular” section.
Another comapny with a simlar concept is Youbars.
Has anyone tried these yet? Is anyone going to? I think I might try it out and post a review if I do.

I have been eating you bars since march and they have been great. I like that element bars are adding competition to the new market but I just don’t feel like they offer the same control or variety. I like that youbar allows you to choose what goes into the base with cashew butter, sesame butter and soynut butter in addition to what element bars offers (dates, peanut butter and almond butter). Also You Bars are guarenteed delicious so I don’t have to worry about my bars tasting good. I was not able to find anything like that on the element bar website. All I know is that I have been “build-a-bar”ing and enjoying “popular bars” from youbar for months and I have no urge to switch to this knockoff.
