Lance Armstrong and Greg Lemond are apparently still not the best of buds. At the Las Vegas Interbike expo yesterday during Lance’s press conference Greg LeMond decided to get a little jerky difficult with his questioning. Armstrong announced that he will be working closely with Don Catlin, who formerly ran UCLA’s World Anti-Doping Agency accredited laboratory. In an effort to portray full transparency, Catlin will post Armstrong’s test results online for anyone who ants to view them.
LeMond; who managed to get the first question in, attacked Catlin’s methods, citing that VO2 max, oxygen intake and power output can be used as indicators of whether a rider has used illicit performance-enhancing methods. To which Catlin answere “that’s not my area of expertise.” Not a very good response in my opinion. LeMond retorted “that it might not be Catlin’s area of expertise, but it is an area that Australian researcher Michael Ashenden has studied.”
At this point Armstrong was apparently getting fed up with LeMond’s heckling and in a PC way of saying leave me the hell alone said “We are here to talk about a few things — the global cancer campaign, my comeback to cycling… I appreciate your being here, but it’s time for everyone here to move on.”
Lemond replied, “So the whole history has just been passed over?”
Armstrong then moved on to the next question.
LeMond drew a similar line of questioning later in the press conference, and after several minutes Armstrong quipped, “Greg, I almost feel like we should have a fourth chair up here” before cutting LeMond off and again taking other questions.
I feel that Armstrong could’ve handled the situation a little more diplomatically; however, as he had said earlier the purpose of this conference was to raise awareness for the reason for his comeback and not really a grilling Q&A.
